How to do the clapping cat trend on CapCut

Updated · Clapping Cat AI

Open CapCut, go to Templates, search "cat clapping meme", tap Use template, add your clip and export. The template is a short green-screen edit: it puts the original black clapping cat over your own clip as a reaction. It doesn't animate your own pet; for that you need a new AI video made from your pet's photo, which you can then edit in CapCut like any other clip.

Step by step

  1. Open the CapCut app and tap Templates.
  2. Search for "cat clapping meme" or "clapping cat" and open a template. Check its length and how many clips it asks for.
  3. Tap Use template and pick the clip or photo the cat should react to.
  4. Preview it, then tap Export to save it or post it straight to TikTok.
  5. Add a caption about what the cat is clapping at.

What the template makes

The template we checked on October 17, 2026 ("cat clapping meme" on CapCut's website) is a 7-second vertical (9:16) green-screen edit with one clip slot, used more than 72,000 times. Your clip plays and the original black cat claps over it. Templates come and go, so the one you find may look different.

Want your own cat clapping?

Templates reuse the original black cat. To have your own cat or dog stand up, grin and clap, make a new video from its photo ($5.90 here, ready in 2 to 5 minutes), then open the MP4 in CapCut to add text or a different sound.

No template? Use the green screen

Any green-screen clip of the clapping cat works with CapCut's overlay and chroma key, and you can place the cat anywhere in your video. The step-by-step is in the guide to the ways to make a clapping cat video.
